A $10,000 college scholarship is up for grabs for a Cortez High School senior. A soup supper is scheduled as a fundraiser for Grace's Community Church. And regional air service is expanding to Southeast Texas this summer. You're watching the local news roundup, brought to you by Tru West Auto and Choice Building Supply. I'm Connor Shreve. The Colorado Grand Classic Car Rally is looking for a high school senior in Cortez to award a $10,000 scholarship to. The non-profit car rally tours the western part of the state every year then gives back to the host towns in varying ways. Cortez is eligible for the scholarship this year as the host of one of The Grand's lunch stops last summer. To apply, interested students need to write about their personal journey and detail how the scholarship will help advance their professional interests. Students must email their applications to the City of Cortez by 4 PM, April 28th. To be eligible, the student must attend or plan to attend a Colorado or Utah college, trade school, or university as a freshman in 2023. Grace's Community Kitchen in Cortez is hosting a fundraiser on Friday, April 28th. Six soups from area kitchen artisans will be available for a suggested donation of $10. That donation will get you a pint of your choice of chilled to-go soup and access to a dessert bar. Soups include a red chile posole, green chile and sausage and Korean beef stew, among others. Pre-ordering is suggested by calling the Saint Barnabus Church or emailing the office at saintBarnabuscortez.org. The event runs from 4:30 to 7 PM. The Durango-La Plata airport is adding seasonal non-stop service to Houston, Texas beginning in June. United will operate the flight on Saturday and Sunday between June 24th and September 3rd. A 76-seat narrow body jet will be used to fly the route. As the nation's 12th busiest airport, George Bush Intercontinental Airport will be able to connect four corners area flyers with many national and international connections. United last operated the Durango to Houston service in 2019/2020 and it was discontinued as a result of the pandemic. Officials with the airport called the route resumption a positive development.
