Award-winning author to speak at Cortez Library

The Cortez Public Library is holding an author talk featuring fiction writer and poet Stacie Denetsosie on Wednesday, April 10th at 5 p.m. In 2023, she published her debut short story collection called “The Missing Morningstar and Other Stories,” which was named 2024 Southwest Book of the Year. El Pomar Foundation has opened applications for its 2024 senior leadership experience program, taking place September 24th through the 27th. Colorado Parks and Wildlife has launched a Colorado Passport Program to encourage people to visit Colorado’s state parks and 15 fish hatcheries. Free passports and stamps are available at Colorado state parks and hatcheries. The Business Support division of the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade and the Colorado Department of Revenue released a free, self-paced sales tax fundamental course for business owners covering tax responsibilities and how to stay compliant. An award-winning author is scheduled to speak at the Cortez Public Library next week. El Pomar Foundation is seeking applicants for its senior leadership program. Colorado Parks and Wildlife has launched a program to encourage state park and hatchery visitors. Meanwhile, Colorado's business support division has released a free tax education course. The Cortez Public Library is holding an author talk, featuring fiction writer and poet, Stacie Denetsosie. In 2023, she published her debut short story collection called "The Missing Morningstar: And Other Stories", which earned a Kirkus Star and was named 2024 Southwest Book of the Year. Denetsosie will be speaking at the Cortez Public Library on Wednesday, April 10th from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. El Pomar Foundation has opened applications for its 2024 Penrose Organization and Professional Leadership Experience program, also called PeOPLE. Applicants should be senior leaders in Colorado with five to 10 years of management experience in the nonprofit or government sectors. The 2024 session will take place September 24th through the 27th in Colorado Springs. The PeOPLE program is in partnership with the Center for the Creative Leadership and is an immersive experience designed to build leadership skills in self-awareness, giving and receiving feedback, and identifying goals and strategies. Applications are open now through Friday, May 24th. Colorado Parks and Wildlife has launched a Colorado Passport Program to encourage people to visit Colorado's state parks and 15 fish hatcheries. Free passports and stamps are available at Colorado State Parks and Hatcheries. Prizes will be mailed to those who have successfully completed their passport, including a Colorado Wildlife All Star patch for visiting all of the state parks and a travel mug for visiting all 15 hatcheries. The business support division of the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade and the Colorado Department of Revenue released a self-paced sales tax fundamental course covering tax responsibilities and how to stay compliant as a business owner. Voices of the Past: Saving a Castle in the Clouds (Part 1)

Beverly Rich was born in Silverton in 1950 and has been involved with the local Historical Society since she was 14 — making her one of the most dedicated keepers of San Juan County's storied past. In her article, Rescuing Relics: Extreme Preservation and the Old Hundred Boarding House, she reflects on what made Silverton remarkable from the very beginning. Few people realize that Silverton is nearly ten years older than Durango, and that without Silverton, Durango wouldn't exist. In its heyday, this remote mountain town was the Silicon Valley of its era — a hub of technological innovation, incredible wealth, and relentless ambition. But like all mining towns, Silverton rode a cycle of boom and bust, its fortunes tied closely to World Wars and commodity prices. The hardest blow came in 1991 when the Sunny Side Mine shut down, taking half the town's population with it. What followed was a period of honest reckoning — and visioning. Silverton leaned into its two greatest assets: spectacular scenery and fascinating history. Today, for the first time ever, Silverton is no longer primarily a mining town. It has become a thriving high-mountain destination, with a booming recreation industry, rising property values, and a new generation discovering what Beverly Rich has known her whole life — this place is something special.
