Cortez Historic Preservation Day Set for May 13

Every year organizers for the Cortez Historic Preservation Day find a new way to honor the historic buildings and art in Cortez. In 2023, organizers will pay homage to the buildings that housed department stores in the 1950’s. The Cortez Historic Preservation Day celebrates its 13th year paying homage to Cortez history later this month. The season's first major mountain bike race is coming up, and organizers need volunteers. The Southwest Rural Philanthropy Days returns in July for the first time in four years, and tickets are on sale now. Now is your chance to learn from local businesses focused on fitness at an upcoming Wellness Expo. You're watching the Local News Roundup, brought to you by Choice Building Supply and Big O Tires. I'm Connor Shreve. Cortez Historic Preservation Day will be Saturday, May 13th, at the Cortez Cultural Center and in various other locations around town. Activities will include a walking tour to the 1950s department stores on Main Street, a vintage car cruise, and more. Cortez Historic Preservation Day will celebrate its 13th birthday this season. Historically, the Cortez Historic Preservation Board, the Cortez Cultural Center, Montezuma County Historical Society, Cortez Arts Commission, and Cortez Retail Enhancement Association have focused on educating the public about the town's historic buildings and murals. You can visit the Cortez Cultural Center at 25 North Market Street for tours and more information, space is limited. The 12 Hours of Mesa Verde mountain bike race at Phil's World is looking for volunteers. The race is on Saturday, May 13th, and race organizers need help with rovers, timing tables, and more. Volunteers do get a goodie bag, a t-shirt, a snack pack, and are entered into a volunteer only raffle for door prizes. Information on how to sign up is online at 12hoursofmesaverde.com. Registration for Southwest Rural Philanthropy Days is now open. The Rural Philanthropy Days conference aims to strengthen local nonprofits and the communities they serve. It'll kick off at Fort Lewis College on Wednesday, June 7th, before moving to the La Plata County Fairgrounds on June 8th. The third day will take grant makers on a tour of Silverton while local nonprofit staff also will have the option of registering for a wellbeing in the workplace retreat, which will be held at Animas High School. This rotating education and networking event happens every four years in the Southwest Colorado region, including Archuleta, Dolores, La Plata, Montezuma, and San Juan Counties, and the Ute Mountain Ute and Southern Ute Tribes. Events include a Southwest Regional Town Hall, a keynote panel on philanthropy, and skill building training sessions among other events. Organizers anticipate more than 70 funders and grant makers to attend the conference. Tickets will be available as long as they last or until May 24th. Details are available on the Community Resource Center's website. Lay your fitness foundation at an upcoming Wellness Expo in Cortez. Mountain Range Fitness will host the expo on Saturday, May 20th, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, other local businesses such as 4 Corners Chiropractic, Why Knot Massage, The Farmstead, and more will be on hand, and you can learn what wellness services they offer.
