The Cortez Elks Lodge is hosting the second annual Last Minute Christmas Bazaar, Coffee Hour with the Cortez Chamber will provide Montezuma County business owners a chance to meet the Chamber's new executive director and board members, and the Sunflower Theatre is looking for short play submissions. You're watching the Local News Roundup, brought to you by Big O Tires and FastSigns. I'm Connor Shreve. So you've put off buying Christmas gifts and now it's getting down to the wire. The Cortez Elks Lodge number 1789 has you covered with its Last Minute Christmas Bazaar. It's the second annual last minute day of shopping put on by the Elks Lodge, and organizers tried to make sure the list of local vendors and artists on-hand will cover a wide variety of product offerings so all your gift-giving needs are taken care of. Music, snacks, and a visit from Mr. and Mrs. Claus are all a part of the festivities, which run from 10 a.m. on Saturday, December 17th, to 5 p.m., Sunday, December 18th. In addition, all vendors donated an item for a silent auction to benefit disabled veterans. Event information is on the Elks Lodge Facebook page. The Cortez Area Chamber of Commerce is inviting any Montezuma County business owners to meet its new executive director and fresh board of directors at Coffee Hour with the Cortez Chamber. It promises to be a great networking opportunity for businesses looking to renew or start a membership with the Chamber. Information and pricing on newly reformed membership packages will be available at the event, and there will be resources on-hand to answer any questions. Coffee Hour with the Cortez Chamber will be held at the Business Resource Center on Thursday, December 15th, from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Main Street. You can also email questions ahead of time to INFO@CortezChamber.com or through Messenger on the Chamber's Facebook page. The Sunflower Shorts is seeking scribes for next season's Sunflower Shorts Play Festival. The Sunflower Theatre Troupe is looking for short, 15-minute plays from writers who live in the four corners to feature as part of its 2023 Sunflower Shorts Play Festival. The Sunflower Theatre will accept entries until January 31st. Colorado Non-Profit Shines Spotlight on Cortez PD

Every year the non-profit Shield 616 raises money to equip officers with safer protective vests. In 2024, the non-profit is working with the Cortez Police Department to purchase 31 “Angel Armor” rifle-rated vests. Spring Job Fair Happening in Cortez on April 19

The Cortez Retail Enhancement Association, in partnership with the Colorado Workforce Center and Cortez, is hosting a spring job fair on Friday, April 19th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Montezuma County Annex Building. On Thursday, April 18th, Duncan Rose will be giving a presentation at the Dolores Public Library titled about the changes, challenges, and tools emerging for the Upper Dolores River. The Montezuma Orchard Restoration Project is conducting a grafting workshop on Saturday, April 13th from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Orchard Hub. Award-winning author to speak at Cortez Library

The Cortez Public Library is holding an author talk featuring fiction writer and poet Stacie Denetsosie on Wednesday, April 10th at 5 p.m. In 2023, she published her debut short story collection called “The Missing Morningstar and Other Stories,” which was named 2024 Southwest Book of the Year. Be “Bear Aware” to Keep Animal Conflicts Trending Down

Colorado Parks and Wildlife received 3,526 reports of sightings and conflicts with bears in 2023, which is a 21 percent decrease from previous years. That’s largely due to healthy natural forage production last season. It’s still too early to tell how 2024 will shape up. San Juan SOLES Program Opens Applications for 2024-2025
