The City of Cortez is soliciting designs from artists as part of a celebration of Historic Preservation Month, and if you're needing a cure for winter cabin fever, put on your bell-bottoms and head to Durango this week for this year's hippie-themed Snowdown. You're watching the "Local NEWS Roundup," brought to you by Blondie's Trophy Room and Keesee Motors. I'm Connor Shreve. The City of Cortez is seeking artists submissions. In preparation for Historic Preservation Month in May, the LOR Foundation and Cortez Retail Enhancement Association have partnered with the City of Cortez in designing a coloring book that highlights historic sites in the area. A panel of judges will be selecting 10 to 25 black line drawings to be featured in the coloring book. Selected artists will receive a free copy of the coloring book, $25 of Cortez Cash, and a check for $100. The artist chosen for the cover page will win $250, along with $50 in Cortez Cash. The contest is open to all levels, ages, and locations. The artist with a connection to Cortez will be given preference. A list of potential historic sites and entry details is available on the City of Cortez website. Submissions are due February 20th. Cortez Parks and Recreation is currently hiring several full and part-time positions, including event specialist, executive assistant, and lifeguard. Job descriptions and applications are available on the City of Cortez website. And if you're looking for a way to shake the winter blues, head to Durango January 26th through February 4th for the 45th annual Snowdown. This year's theme, Peace, Love, and Snowdown. The event originated in 1979 as a way to bring the community together for fun and festivities during the long winter. The week is packed with both free and ticketed events, including pillow fights, karaoke, tie-dyeing, Snowdown Follies, theme contests, and more. Visit the Snowdown website for the full schedule. The Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles recently announced the top license plate designs for last year. Of Colorado's historical plates, the blackout plate quickly became the most popular with nearly 170,000 registered plates. The plate's $25 fee contributed over $4 million to the Colorado Disability Funding Committee. The Columbine plate, honoring the 13 lives lost during the shooting at Columbine High School, is listed as the number one specialty plate with over 75,000 vehicles registered. In total, Colorado has over 200 plate designs with new options available this year, including the Born to Be Wild Plate, the In God We Trust Plate, the Stegosaurus State Fossil Plate, and the Navy Seabees Military plate.
