The City of Cortez is asking residents to check their pipes for lead as part of new state and federal laws. The Mancos Public Library and Pinon Project are making plans for Valentine's Day, and celebrate our nation and state's anniversary by learning a 24 letter word. You're watching "The Local News Roundup," brought to you by Choice Building Supply and Big O Tires. I'm Connor Shreve. The City of Cortez is conducting an inventory on the presence of lead in water service lines, the pipes that bring water from the provider to your home. To comply with new state and federal regulations and ensure the safety of drinking water, the City of Cortez is asking residents to fill out a survey, identifying the pipes' material. Lead may be found in older pipes and plumbing, which when corroded, can lead to water contamination. Lead must be tested for as it cannot be seen or tasted in water and exposure can result in health issues. For info on how to test your pipes and what to do if lead is found, visit the City of Cortez website. Mancos Friends of the Library is having a Valentine's Day Bake Sale at the Mancos Public Library on Wednesday, February 14th from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Meeting for Friends of the Library happen the first Tuesday of every month at 4:00 PM and are open to the public. The Pinon Project is hosting a teens Valentine's Day party on Tuesday, February 13th, as well as a variety of other events for middle and high school students throughout the month of February. In 2026, the US will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and at the same time, Colorado will mark the 150th anniversary of its statehood, the America 250 - Colorado 150 Commission was developed to guide the planning for the twin commemorations, including community events, historic preservation, educational opportunities, and more. To that end, local organizing committees have been established across the state to set up and coordinate activities on February 7th. The Mountains and Mesas Regional South and Local Organizing Committees will host a planning meeting at the La Plata County Exhibit Hall. Individuals and organizations are invited to attend the meeting to learn more about proposed activities and events. For the word nerds out there, the word for 250 years is semiquincentennial. The word for 150 years is sesquicentennial. Combine the two, you get sesqui-semiquin-centennial. Don't worry, you have about two years to practice.
