The Lore Foundation awarded $10,000 to the Cortez Public Library for its teen science technology, engineering, and math programs. The library plans to use the grant to purchase 3D printers, robotics kits, music and photo editing, software and computers. Library Director Beth Edson says The new equipment will get students excited about technology and build new skills. The library will launch new STEM programs in 2026 to inspire creativity and increase digital literacy. Visit the Cortez public library for schedules and program updates. The City of Cortez encourages community comments and questions about the 2026 proposed budget. Budget readings will be at the city council meeting on Tuesday, October 28th, and at the public hearing on Wednesday, November 12th. Meetings will be at 7:30 PM at City Hall, and both meetings will be live streamed on the city's website. The proposed budget includes more than $39 million in city expenditures and an estimated $40 million in revenue from taxes, recreation, and other miscellaneous fees and charges. The draft prioritizes allocating funds to public safety infrastructure and city owned facilities like the airport. The City of Cortez also seeks youth and adult applicants to fill vacancies in the Board of Adjustment and Appeals Public Arts Advisory Board, library Advisory Board Parks Recreation and Forestry Board and Golf Advisory Board. The Wildfire Adapted partnership will receive more than $2 million from the United States Forest Service community, wildfire Defense Grant Program to improve wildfire preparedness in Montezuma County. The wildfire adapted partnership works with communities to educate homeowners about the need for defensible spaces coordinates home wildfire risk site assessments offers chipper rebates to reduce flammable vegetation and wood debris, and hosts other wildfire education and prevention programs. The US Department of Agriculture awarded $26 million to seven projects in counties across Colorado as part of the bipartisan infrastructure law passed in 2021 for forest management and wildfire preparedness.
